Xiamen Overseas Immersion Programme 2017' (Day 2)

Day 2 saw us preparing for a busy day ahead going for VIA in two children welfare centres, with one being a hybrid, providing welfare services and facilities to both children and the elderly.

Grabbing all of our pre-prepared goodie bags and some of our own items to be donated, mostly categorised to toys, stationaries and books.

VIA #1: Xiangan' District Tongxin Children Home

We went aboard the bus to bring us to our first welfare centre, which was the Tongxin Children Home, where we performed songs and dance for the adorable children over at the kindergarten. Besides performing for them, we gave them some activities to do such as colouring the colouring book especially prepared for them.

Pictures 1&2: We guided the children on colouring the book, as well as the performance.

After all was done, we took a group photo outside the home with our teachers and the staff, including the principal.

Lunch

Next, we went to another halal restaurant downtown to gain back lost energy as well as unwind and enjoy some jokes and games.

VIA #2: Shi Shan Social Welfare Centre

Subsequently, we embarked on a long two-hour journey to the Shi Shan Social Welfare Centre after lunch. At the centre, we sorted out and categorised our goodie bags items as well as personally donated items into three basic categories -- stationaries, books and toys. After all was sorted out, we went on a tour around the centre to get an insight into the lives of the students and elderly as well as the facilities that are laid out for them.

Facilities and Activities we've done with them

Students live in a dormitory where each room consists of 4-6 double-decker bunk beds, with no pillows but only a few sheets of blankets. They have limited amounts of storage spaces and their shoes are laid out on the open floor.

The centre also has its own farm too, where vegetables are grown and maintained by the elderly over at the centre with interests in farming.

The boys'/men quarters are located on the left together with the television room, while the girl's/ladies quarters' are located on the right together with the canteen.

At the centre, we also played with the children some football, basketball and games.
We concluded the trip to the Shi Shan Welfare Centre with a group photo before bidding goodbye to the wonderful children there.

Evening: Dine, debrief and unwind

Similarly, we had a long 2-hour ride back to the metropolitan areas in Xiamen, where we went to another local halal restaurant to dine-in and enjoy our dinner.

After dinner, we went back to our hotel and were asked to write a reflection and debriefed.
